Sebastian Hoover was a Lieut in the Militia in April 27, 1780. He was looking for deserters. He went to the house of Phillip Eckard, who lived a little below Sugar Grove, Pendleton, WV. In disregard of a warning by the Eckard family, he opened the door of the inner room and was shot dead by John Wilfong, who made his escape. The following December, Wilfong was brought before a called Session of the Augusta Court, adjudged guilty, and Phillip Eckard and John Snyder were held as witnesses. The journal of the state auditor for the following March mentions the trial, but we do not know the results. Wilfong seems to have disappeared. This information is from Morton's Handbook of Highland County - supplement page 61. Appraising the estate of Sebastian Hoover are Jacob Hoover, Christian Roleman, Henry Stone and Henry Swadley on August 28, 1780. His widow and Sebastian, his father are heirs. This information is from MINUTE BOOK ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1778-1786.2 On December 4, 1780 he was accused of the murder of Sebastian Hoover, Jr. which took place on Apr. 27.3
