Jacob Teets Sr. married Barbara "Barbary" Wilson, daughter of Joseph Wilson.¹ Jacob Teets Sr. was born on 18 July 1815 in Virginia.^4,5,6,7,8,9 He was the son of Jacob Teets and Mary Barbara Miller.¹ Jacob Teets Sr. died on 9 February 1892 at age 76.^5,4 He was buried in Lost River, Hardy, West Virginia.^10,11

Jacob lived in Preston County during part of his life, then settled in Hardy County, near Wardensville, West Virginia. During the 1880 census, their granddaughter Eliza Teets lived with them; she was 15.¹² Jacob Teets Sr. was also known as Jacob Teats.^13,14

at any rate , frank records births of 3 buried on mtn. top as jacob b. 1815,
barbara b. 1816, and their dau., mary etta b.1844. he recalled 12 graves
when he was a boy, but only these 3 had written stones, the others were
field stones. guess i should say field stones as the only water source is a
still today natural stream which barely flows.

i will have to check rubbings and or other info, but believe this is correct
as believe stones say, jacob 76yrs. 6mos. 22days, barb. 72 yrs. 5 mos. 20
days, and mary etta 44 yrs 4 mos. 3 days. this is what i noted on frank's
family sheets mailed to me in the 80s. mary etta was laban's sister. jacob
and barb. wilson teets sr. were b july 15, 1815 and nov. 6, 1816. died feb.
9, 1892 and apr. 8, 1889. they are parents of laban, mary etta, another
jacob and who marr. mary eliz. see.

jacob and barb. miller teets are the parents of the jac. buried on teets'
mtn.

Laban W. Teets was an ex-confederate soldier, a member of the hardy grays 3rd regiment Stonewall Brigade.¹⁶ Notes from Florence Teets Mining:

"I believe this is the same Laban Teets who enlisted 5/23/1861 as an American Civil War soldier, as a private in the Confederate Army."¹⁷ Laban Wilson Teets was also known as Laben W. Teats.¹⁸ Served in the Confederate Solders Army (CSA), Virginia, 33 Infantry Company F.³ He left a will on 13 October 1915 in Hardy County Court House, Moorfield, Hardy, West Virginia; Written by Eddie Teets [aka James Edward Teets]: be it remembered that on the 13th day of October 1915 Laban W. Teets made his will.^19,20

[S469] Sue Dietz, Transcription by Sue of Laban Wilson's Family Bible 8/10/2005. Sue believes that Virginia "Ginnie" Teets, Laban's wife, made (most of) the entrees in the bible, because she omitted herself. Last entries in the bible were made by the youngest child, Amanda, at a later date. In family portrait, everyone holds an object indicating they are literate and can read and write. In the bible record, the oddity is that the births are recorded in the death side and vice versa. The added children are taped to the page, a torn piece with names taped to the births (on the death page). Note the spellings.

(As I told you, this is not an easy place to find and is totally neglected - covered by thorn bushes and the headstones are lying down.) Surviving are 8 sons (Chester, Clifton, Ivan, Orville, Moses, Vane, David, and Frank), 2 daughters (Ruby-Mrs. Elmer Funk and Shirley-Mrs. Boyd Fink), 2 grandchildren who were reared in her home (Carol-Mrs. Donald Yankey and Garry Wilt), 33 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, 2 brothers(Roy and Andrew Wilkins), and one sister (Mary-Mrs. D. D. Wilkins). She was a member of the Salem Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held June 19, in charge of S. A. Shank, M. C. Showalter, and A. T. Rollins; interment in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mathias,W.Va.

As you can see, I don’t have all of the information and am looking to fill in the holes. I found your website from the grandchildren of Branson Teets whom I found by calling random names in the phone book in the Hardy County, WVA area.
Of my father and his siblings, there are no males to carry on the Teets name from Jacob’s lineage. I would like to find out the names of Jacob J. Teets’ parents and his wife’s (Mary Elizabeth) maiden name. I wonder when they settled in the Lost River/Hardy County area and other questions regarding the family history.

I have 3 photos given to me by my father’s sister, Gladys Irene Teets Welch of Stephens City Virginia before she died. They are photos taken at the home place in the Lost River area and show Jacob and Mary Elizabeth with their 9 children, another with the 9 children and their husbands or wives, and then one with the grandchildren, which total 26. My father is not in the photo since it was probably taken in the early fall of 1920 and he was born in 1922.
