    Orval Lawrence Teets, b. September 21, 1921, d. January 20, 2009
    Orval Lawrence Teets of Swanton, died at Garrett Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 after a long and giving life of 87 years.
    Born on September 21, 1921 in Friendsville, he was the son of the late George Harvey and Arvetta Pearl (Fearer) Teets.
    He was employed by the B&O and subsequent Chessie System railroads and completed 42 years of service. Following his retirement, he served on the Supervisory Committee of the Chessie Federal Credit Union and was an active member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Employees (NARVE).
    Mr. Teets was an active citizen and loved his town of Swanton. He was a member of Swanton Otterbein Methodist Church, where he served in numerus offices to include Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent for more than 20 years. Mr. Teets was known for his singing at church -- his deep bass was a key part of many gospel groups that included the Gloryland Four, the Brotherhood Four, and Peggy & the Mt. Top Gospelaires.
    Involvement in his community included establishing the Swanton Community Association where he served in capacities ranging from chicken barbeque chief to president of the Community Association; he was instrumental in securing a grant to refurbish and rebuild the Community Center's playground and pavillion, respectively.
    He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), initially serving as assistant Scout Master of Troop 57 in Swanton for more than 25 years. He was presented the prestigious Silver Beaver Achievement Award by the BSA Potomac Council. Until his death, he continued to be an active member of Troop 57, serving as a Senior Board Member.
    He was a founding member of Restless Ridge Hunting Club, and throughout his entire life, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, trapper, and "ginsenger"...and he even raised a few beagle puppies along the way.
    Mr. Teets, a member of the Piedmont VFW, was a veteran of WWII and served as a Staff Sergeant in France and Germany with the 71st Infantry Division, 5th U.S. Infantry Regiment beginning in January 1944.
    He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mareva E. (Rhodes) Teets, two daughters Linda (Teets) Fleming Glotfelty, and her husband Ross Glotfelty of Swanton, and Christina (Teets) Riley and her husband Robin Riley of Mt. Airy, MD; five grandchildren, Lucinda (Fleming) Davis, Swanton, Lawre (Fleming) Virts and her husband Randy Virts of Swanton, Lissa (Fleming) Bush, and her husband David Bush, Orlando, FL, Albert John "A.J." Fleming, II and his wife April Fleming, Swanton, and Ellen Kidwell Riley, Mt. Airy, MD; two sisters, Rose Teets Laub, Markleysburg, PA, Mildred Teets Umbel, Friendsville and one brother, Warren W. Teets, Lakeland, FL. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, and by 6 brothers: Arthur Teets, Stanley "Jim" Teets, Ivan Teets, Charles "Glen" Teets, Harvey Teets, Jr., and Kenneth Teets.
    Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, P.A. in McHenry on Thursday, January 22 from 2-4PM and from 7-9PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 23 at 2:00 PM at the Swanton Otterbein Methodist Church, with the Reverend Angela Cosner, officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Gardens, Oakland. Pallbearers will be Edward "Bo" Blomquist, Steve Davis, A. J. Fleming, Jim Rhodes, Lance Rhodes, and Randy Virts. Honorary pallbearer will be Reiner Teets.
    The family requests, in lieu of flowers, people consider sending a donation to Hospice of Garrett County Inc., 69 Wolf Acres Drive, Oakland MD, 21550.

    "Funeral services were to be held today for a Friendsville, Md. man killed early Saturday morning in a traffice accident near Cheat Lake.
    Quincy Gordon Umbel, 60, was dead on arrival at the West Virginia University Medical Center following the 1:15 crash.
    His pickup truck and an auto operated by Timothy Wayne Bowers, 26, of Morgantown R.D. 6, W. Va., collided on the Fairchance Rd., just north of Cheat Lake near Donaldson Cometery in Monongalia County.
    The accident was investigated by the Monongalia County sheriff's office.
    Both the victim and Bowers were trapped in their respective vehicles.
    They were taken in the hospital by the Cheat Lake Emergency Medical Squad.
    Mr. Bowers were in critical condition last night in the hospital's intensive care unit. The vehicles hit head-on.
    Mr. Umbel, father of 14 children, was en route home from work at the Buckeye Stone Co. at Fairchance when the accident occurred.
    Mr. Umbel, a member of the Asher Glade Church of the Brethren and a vetran of World War II, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Teats Umbel; seven sons, Gerald of Cleveland, Ohio; Ronald of Chardon; Stanley of East Lake, Ohio; William and Richard of Friendsville; Quincy Jr. of Painesville, Ohio and Ervin, at home; seven daughters, Mrs. Ruth Barefoot, Mrs. Judy Workman, Mrs. Cathie Ann McGhee and Mrs. Debra Rosenberger, all of Friendsville; Mrs. Margaret Savage of East Lake, Ohio; Mrs. Nancy Wayne of Markleysburg and Mrs. Diana Fisher of Streetsboro, Ohio; five sisters, Mrs. Iva Lytle of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Olive Lowdermilk and Mrs. Beul;ah Lowermilk, both of Friendsville; Mrs. Jean Enos of Confluence and Mrs. Ireta Holman of Oakland, Md., and 30 grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Quincy G. Umbel on Saturday, April 2, 1977; grandchildren, Timothy Umbel and Donna Beachy; seven brothers and one sister.

    HAMPTON - Kenneth W. Teets, 77, died at home, surrounded by those he loved, on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, after a brief illness.
    A resident of Norfolk since 1954 and a Garrett County, Md., native, he had moved to Hampton in September 2007.
    Born in Friendsville, Md., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and married the former Encie Odell Rhodes in 1954. A submariner and Chief Radioman, Teets served aboard the diesel submarines USS Redfin and the USS Cubera. He also served 10 years of his Navy career on destroyers. He retired from the Navy in 1967 after service during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and served 20 years as a telecommunications supervisor in the U.S. Civil Service, retiring in 1988.
    A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Encie; and his daughter, Tracey Teets Schwarze.
    The youngest of 10 children, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey Ward Teets; his parents, Harvey and Pearl Teets; and his brothers, Arthur, Ivan, Stanley "Jim", Glenn and June.
    He is survived by sisters, Rose Laub of Confluence, Pa., and Mildred Umbel of Friendsville, Md.; and brothers, Orval Teets of Swanton, Md., and Warren Teets of Lakeland, Fla.; and more than 250 nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Albert G. Horton State Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. A service of celebration will take place at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Swanton, Md., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.

    HAMPTON - Kenneth W. Teets, 77, died at home, surrounded by those he loved, on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, after a brief illness.
    A resident of Norfolk since 1954 and a Garrett County, Md., native, he had moved to Hampton in September 2007.
    Born in Friendsville, Md., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and married the former Encie Odell Rhodes in 1954. A submariner and Chief Radioman, Teets served aboard the diesel submarines USS Redfin and the USS Cubera. He also served 10 years of his Navy career on destroyers. He retired from the Navy in 1967 after service during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and served 20 years as a telecommunications supervisor in the U.S. Civil Service, retiring in 1988.
    A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Encie; and his daughter, Tracey Teets Schwarze.
    The youngest of 10 children, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey Ward Teets; his parents, Harvey and Pearl Teets; and his brothers, Arthur, Ivan, Stanley "Jim", Glenn and June.
    He is survived by sisters, Rose Laub of Confluence, Pa., and Mildred Umbel of Friendsville, Md.; and brothers, Orval Teets of Swanton, Md., and Warren Teets of Lakeland, Fla.; and more than 250 nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Albert G. Horton State Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. A service of celebration will take place at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Swanton, Md., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.
    The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Kenneth W. Teets Endowed Merit Scholarship, Christopher Newport University Education Foundation, 1 University Place, Newport News, VA 23606.

    — SWANTON — Mareva Ellen Teets, 86, of Swanton, went peacefully to her heavenly home on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2011, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.

    Born in Bond on Jan. 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John Curtis Rhodes and Goldie Emma (Wilson) Rhodes of Swanton. She was married to the love of her life, the late Orval L. Teets and she also was preceded in death by two brothers, Capt. Curtis Allen Rhodes and Harry Warnick.

    Surviving are her children, Linda (Fleming) Glotfelty and husband Melvin Ross of Cranesville, W.Va., Christina L. Riley and husband Robin N. of Mt. Airy; two sisters, Encie Teets and Caroline Hutson, both of Hampton, Va.; one brother, Michael Rhodes Sr. of Mountain Lake Park; grandchildren, Lucinda Davis and husband Steven of Asbury, W.Va., Lawre Virts and husband Randy of Swanton, Lissa Bush and husband David of Orlando, Fla., Albert (A.J.) Fleming and wife April of Swanton, and Ellen Riley of Mt. Airy; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

    Mrs. Teets was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, serving as carrier and then clerk in Piedmont, W.Va., from 1967 to 1985. She also served her community of Swanton in many ways. She held positions in the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church, including Sunday school superintendent, Boy and Girl Fellowship Leader, Administrative Board president, active United Methodist Women member and choir member. Also, she was secretary for Camp Agape for many years. She served as Girl Scout assistant leader in Swanton and directed the first Girl Scout day camps in Garrett County. She attended the 1959 Girl Scout Round-up in Colorado; she was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and was recently honored on Girl Scout Sunday at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church. She also was instrumental in establishing the Swanton Community Association. She was The Republican newspaper community reporter for Swanton News for 25 years, as she resided most of her life in Swanton.

    Friends and family will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 26722 Garrett Highway, Accident (McHenry), on Thursday, May 19, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

    Friends and family are also invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church with Pastors Angie Cosner and Ross Glotfelty officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.

    Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
