Lucy Blanche Brown died in at home of son, Aurora, Preston, West Virginia.1 She was born in Beverly, West Virginia.1 She was the daughter of Bernard Brown and Elizabeth Dailey.1 Lucy Blanche Brown married Page Robert McCrum, son of Summers West McCrum and Eliza Hough Nicklin, on 16 November 1887.1,2
She witnessed from the doorstep of her home, the burial with military
honors of a young officer of the Civil War.
Later, she became a refugee in Albemarle Co, VA, where she lived with
relatives and attended private school and had classes under Mrs. Laura J. Arnold, sister of Stonewall Jackson. Among her valuable possessions is a Bible presented to her by Mrs. Arnold
for memorizing the Lord's Prayer.
The death of her father in Beverly shortly after the close of the war
caused the family,
the widow and 11 children, to separate and Mrs. McCrum went to live with relatives in
Cordova, IL, where she grew to womanhood. When she was 16 years of age,
she was baptized in the Mississippi River, a hole being cut in ice for the immersion.
She is a direct decendent of John Hart, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
From early girlhood, she had collected data and in 1932 had completed a
500 page book of closely typewritten sheets of history of her own and her husband's family which contained in many instances, a direct genealogy dating back as far as the tenth century
and in one instance to the Roman Emperor in the year 782 A.D.
