     Johan Elias Ours (Auer) was born between 1700 and 1720 in Singen, Baden-Durlach, Germany.^2,3 He married Catherine Barbara Matthias on 21 January 1738 in near Karsruhe, Singen, Baden-Durlach, Germany.^1,3 Johan Elias Ours (Auer) died between 1788 and 1790 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.⁴
     In West Virginia and neighboring states, the Ours surname begins with the arrival of the ship Edinburg in Philadelphia 14 Sept. 1753 [Captained by James Russell]. "Johannes Awer" and other Germans with names familiar in the South Branch entered the colony. Johann Auer (pronounced Our), wife and child were given permission that year to leave the principality of Baden-Durlach. Their village, Singen, is by the Black Forest and near Karsruhe. It typically required 3-5 months to complete a journey down the Rhine river to Rotterdam and an arduous Atlantic crossing aboard a crowded tiny sailing vessel.
Johann Elias Auer married Catharina Barbara Matthias 21 Jan. 1738 in Singen. A son, Johannes Auer, was born and baptized Nov. 27, 1739. Today, as then, the Lutheran Church stands on a rise above the community which, itself, has not changed greatly over the years. Why leave Singen to live in the frontier wilderness of Virginia? Severe economic conditions and lack of opportunity were surely motives. "By 1755 they had traveled up the Shenandoah and crossed the mountains, perhaps via Brock's Gap, to settle at the junction of North and South Mill Creeks. A son, "Sigmon" was born that year in "Hampshire" County.
John Our and family lived thru the dangerous times of the French and Indian Wars on their South Branch Manor leasehold John died 1788-1790. According to the records of the old" German" North Mill Creek Church, "Catherine Ours" (b. 1716) wife of John O. died Feb. 2, 1802. Most likely they were buried in the cemetery next to the Brake Church in the row of unmarked graves adjacent to Sigmon and his family.
John Godfrey Our, who had traveled with them from Singen, was restless and over the years lived in Hardy, Rockingham, Monongalia and Harrison counties. He married Anna Maria "Weatherholt" of Rockingham, 12 Jan. 1776. Her family lived up in Brock's Gap. Their children included Nicholas, John, Henry and Sarah. The boys may have been born in Rockingham or Hardy, but the family was living near Buckhannon in 1795 when Indians massacred the Bozarth family. John and Henry served with the militia during the war of 1812. Nicholas and Henry resided near Buckhannon. Sarah lived in Mason Co. and John crossed the Ohio into Meigs Co. Godfrey and Anna Maria probably remained near Buckhannon. John Godfrey's death was after July 1801 and Anna Maria about 1810.
In 1780 Sigmon Our married Mary Simon. Their children included Catherine, Ann Maria, Elizabeth, Eve, Sarah, Jacob, Susanna, Solomon, John, Andrew and Jonathon. Were there others? Sigmon served with the militia during the Revolutionary War. His grave in the old North Mill Creek Church Cemetery is marked with a very worn stone (5 Sep. 1844). A marker recognizing his military service was dedicated in 1988. Mary (d. about 1854), his wife, was living with Jonathon in 1850. Sarah married William Weese. His family was probably also from the area near Singen. Jacob traveled to Harrison Co. and in 1816 married Nancy Crislip. The younger brothers puchased land above Rough Run (Conway Ours' place) in 1835. Solomon (d before 1870) married Sallie George and Johathon (d 190 1) Catherine Rice. . Both families remained on this tract. John (d 1864 in a Home Guard Skirmish \\ith McNeills's Rangers at Johnson Run) had relocated to North Mill Creek and Married Elizabeth Kimmel, possibly his second wife. Andrew (d 1885) moved to the Hopeville/Smoke Hole Cavern area. He married Elizabeth Skidmore and later Mary 1. Kimble.
There are many spellings of the family and individual names. Our in all it's variations appears as late as 1850. Yet Ours is noted early, appears increasingly in the records and becomes the accepted name later in the 1800s. Ours families living near Petersburg descend from John Our but the connections for many are not yet established. Surely John and Catherine had other children.
Submitted by Elliott Ours, Shepherdstown, WV.^2,5 Johan Elias Ours (Auer) was also known as Johannes Awer.² According to "Immigrants in Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776", he went to Pennsylvania.⁶ Johan Elias Auer, aka Johannes Auer, took the Oath of Allegiance in Rotterdam, Germany, on September 14, 1758.⁵

     Catherine Barbara Matthias was born in 1716 in Germany.^1,2 She married Johan Elias Ours (Auer) on 21 January 1738 in near Karsruhe, Singen, Baden-Durlach, Germany.^1,2 Catherine Barbara Matthias died on 21 February 1802 in Hampshire, (West) Virginia.^1,2

     Mary Simon was buried in Brake Cemetery, Grant, (West) Virginia.² She was born in 1761.¹ She married Sigmon / Cichman Ours, son of Johan Elias Ours (Auer) and Catherine Barbara Matthias, in 1780 in Pendleton, (West) Virginia.¹ Mary Simon died in 1851.³ She died circa 1854.¹

     Catherine Ours was born on 21 March 1783 in (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Catherine Ours died in 1799.²

     Anna Marie Ours was born on 22 November 1784 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Anna Marie Ours died on 7 April 1873 at age 88.²

     Elizabeth Ours was born on 12 January 1786 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Elizabeth Ours died in 1829.²

     Eve B. Ours was born on 19 December 1788 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹

     Sarah Ours was born on 3 April 1791 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Sarah Ours married William Weese on 22 October 1809 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² Sarah Ours died on 2 November 1880 at age 89.²

     Jacob Ours was born on 29 December 1796 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² He was the son of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Jacob Ours married Nancy Crislip on 4 July 1816 in Harrison, (West) Virginia.^2,3

     Susannah Ours was born on 5 August 1799 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² She was the daughter of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Susannah Ours died on 13 January 1802 at age 2.²

     Solomon Ours was born on 11 January 1801 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² He was the son of Sigmon / Cichman Ours and Mary Simon.¹ Solomon Ours married Sallie George on 8 January 1832 in Hardy, (West) Virginia.² Solomon Ours died on 17 March 1883 at age 82.²
