    MARRIAGES IN HIGHLAND COUNTY
In Civil War Days, When Couples From Pendleton County Went to Virginia To Marry

During the War between the States and for a year or two subsequent thereto, Highland County, Virginia, was a sort of Gretna Green for such persons in Pendleton County as desired to forsake the paths of single blessedness and take upon themselves the yoke and burden of matrimony under the perennial misconception that the yoke is easy and the burden light.
This was probably due to the fact that the county government in Pendleton sometimes functioned somewhat imperfectly on account of the chaotic condition of the county consequent upon civil war.
On a recent trip to Monterey, the writer took it upon himself to make search of the records and list the marriages which should logically have taken place in Pendleton. The names of the contracting parties, the date of marriage and the name of the officiating minister are given in each instance. It is hoped that the County court of this county will take the necessary steps to have these marriages records copied and certified in full by the proper authority and recorded in Pendleton county, where they rightfully belong.

After the lapse of some years, the rumor was started that these Highland county marriages were illegal, because of the licenses therefor having been procured in a county and state other than the legal domicile of the contracting parties. The rumor came to one person who had not found the matrimonial yoke easy and the burden light, and he quietly remarked that if it turned out they were really not legal marriages, he was going to try to get a better wife next time.
Now, a word about these marrying parsons of more than three score years ago:
Saul B. Dolly was a Methodist minister, a native of Pendleton county, and in the ministerial service in is native county at the time. He had married in Highland county and for a portion of the time made his home there.
George W. Rexrode was a local United Brethren preacher, who was active in ante-bellum and post-bellum days on East Dry Run and North Dry Run, as well as lower down on the North Fork.
John S. Pullin was a zealous local Methodist preacher in eastern Highland county, noted for conducting religious revival meetings.
William T. Price was a Presbyterian preacher in charge of the work of that church in Pendleton county, the father of Any Price, of Marlington, whom everyone knows.
Daniel Thomas and George Wine were local preachers of the Dunkard church from Rockingham county, Virgina.
