Muscatine, Iowa, July 9-
William Teets, a well known and respected farmer living ten miles southwest of this city was murdered yesterday about 1 o'clock, in his hayfield, with a club in the hands of William Pickering. The cause of the dastardly act seems to have been family troubles. The murdered man, Teets, was a son-in-law of Mrs. Dickerson, a widow, who employed Pickering as a farm hand on her estate, and between whom an improper intimacy has been charged, and an immediate marriage being expected. Teets and his wife, it is said, remonstrated with the mother, who doubtless communicated the conversation to Pickering at dinner yesterday, whereupon he started on his murderous errand. Going to the field in which Teets was engaged, making hay, Pickering approached Teets, and a few sharp words ensued, whereupon Pickering dealt the latter two terrific blows with the club. Teets falling, Pickering kicked the head of the body at his feet in a fiendish manner, and turned to the witnesses, a son of Teets', 14 years of age, a brother-in-law of similar age, and an old man of 60, remarking- "I have settled with him for what he said about me," and
