AMOS SCHUYLER TEETS -- One of the pioneer German settlers of Hunterdon County was Jacob Teets, who located there about 1800 and founded the family of which Amos Schuyler Teets, of High Bridge, Clinton Township, is a representative member. The original Teets had a son, Peter Teets, who was born June 1, 1814, and who settled in Fairmont, Hunterdon County, where he married and brought up his family, engaging in the dual occupations of farmer and shoemaker. His wife was rachel Schuyler, and they had nineteen children, one of whom, Andrew S. teets, was born January 28, 1837, and married Mary Able, daughter of Sutton and Sarah (Wells) Able. He was of Holland Dutch descent. She was born in Maine and of English descent. They had four children, three boys and one girl, all of whom are living at the date of this record (1928). These children were: 1. Martin H. 2. Amos Schuyler, of whom this is a record. 3. George Edward, and architect of Asbury Park, New Jersey. 4. Gretta Elizabeth.
Amos Schulyer Teets was born April 9, 1864, the son of Andrew S. and Mary (Able) Teets. He was born in Hunterdon County, but his family removed to Somerset County when he was about six or seven years of age. He remained there until his father's death, which occurred January 28, 1905. His mother passed away in May, 1914. The early education of Mr. teets was acquired in the public schools of Bedminster, Somerset County, and he learned the trade of carpenter, in which he engaged until 1913. In 1914, Mr. Teets purchased a farm in Clinton Township near High Bridge and there engaged in the dairy business, with a fine herd of forty high-bred Holstein cows. His farm consisted of one hundred and eighty-six acres andwas thoroughly brought up to date in every respect. Mr. Teets was ever prominent in all projects for the advancement of the community, and served for several years as a member of the Town Council.
On March 15, 1886, Mr. Teets married Virginia Nicholas, daughter of Elias and Sarah (Reed) Nicholas. Mrs Teets was born in Hackettstown and received most of her schooling in Arlington. Mr. and Mrs. Teets lived in Arlington for some eighteen years, where five of their six children were born. Their children are as follows: 1. Frances Virginia, married to Raymond Cumback; they have six children. 2. Jessie Helen, married toRichard Backer; they had seven children, five of whom are living [1928]. 3. Lawrence Frederick, married Elizabeth Backer; they have had four children, of whom but one survived. 4. Lloyd Schuyler, married Ida Ogden Hill; they had three children, all girls. 5. Leslie Vincent, married Frances Wolfe; they have two children he enlisted for the World War but did not get overseas. 6 Allyn Nicholas, married Helen Miller; two children, one living.

  1. [S1056] Cherry Tharp [e-mail address], Thank you so much for this web site. My father, Cecil Jackson Teets, died on August 22, 1986. His father was Jacob Jackson Teets who was born on Sept. 20, 1885 and died July 4, 1956. Jacob was one of 9 children of Jacob J. Teets of Hardy County, W. VA. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Teets. I believe that their children’s names are:

Charles Teets born Aug. 29, 1875 and died June 13, 1954
    Branson Teets
    John G. Teets born Dec. 1, 1878 and died Aug. 9, 1936
    Hattie Teets Bradfield born 1880
    Jacob Jackson Teets (my grandfather)
    Moses P. Teets born 1887
    Robert Teets
Kate Teets Combs (Mrs. Granville Combs)
Belle Teets Wilkins (Mrs. Herbert Wilkins

As you can see, I don’t have all of the information and am looking to fill in the holes. I found your website from the grandchildren of Branson Teets whom I found by calling random names in the phone book in the Hardy County, WVA area.
Of my father and his siblings, there are no males to carry on the Teets name from Jacob’s lineage. I would like to find out the names of Jacob J. Teets’ parents and his wife’s (Mary Elizabeth) maiden name. I wonder when they settled in the Lost River/Hardy County area and other questions regarding the family history.

I have 3 photos given to me by my father’s sister, Gladys Irene Teets Welch of Stephens City Virginia before she died. They are photos taken at the home place in the Lost River area and show Jacob and Mary Elizabeth with their 9 children, another with the 9 children and their husbands or wives, and then one with the grandchildren, which total 26. My father is not in the photo since it was probably taken in the early fall of 1920 and he was born in 1922.

Thank you again for the research opportunity here.

    Cheryl (Cherry) Teets Tharp
    McGaheysville, Va. 22840.
  2. [S1056] Cherry Tharp [e-mail address], Attached are the photos given to me by my Aunt Gladys Teets Welch, daughter of Cora Dellinger Teets and Jacob Jackson Teets. Some of the identifications on your photo album do not agree with what she told me. I am certain that there needs to be a correction on the one with my grandparents on it who are incorrectly identified as Charles and Elizabeth Baker in the photo album numbered photo. I believe the group photos were taken at the Teets home place in Lost River, WVA, but I do not know if the house is still there or where exactly it was. I will continue to look for it.

My aunt identified the children of Jacob J. Teets and Mary Elizabeth See Teets in their photo (attached) as

    First row left to right:

Belle Teets Wilkins; “Kate” Teets (who your album calls Rachel Catherine Teets); the father Jacob J. Teets; the mother Mary Elizabeth [See] Teets; and Hattie Teets Bradfield.

    Back row left to right:

Robert Teets; Moses Teets; Jacob Jackson Teets (my grandfather); John G. Teets; Branson Teets; and Charles Teets.

I am not as certain on the photo with the 9 “in-laws” added, but I know my grandparents are misidentified, could it be corrected on your website please?

#1 – correctly identified as Rachel Catherine “Katie” Teets
#2 her husband, Noah Granville Combs
#3 my grandmother, Cora Ann Dellinger Teets
#4 my grandfather, Jacob Jackson Teets
#5 Jessie M. Teets, wife of Moses
    #6 Moses P. Teets
#7 Ethel Clem Teets (from Mathias, WVA and wife of Branson)
    #8 Branson Teets
    #9 Charles Teets
#10 probably Della Combs wife of Robert (?)
    #11 Robert Teets
#12 Quincy Bradfield, husband of Hattie
#13 Elizabeth Baker Teets, wife of Charles (?) (but NOT Cora Dellinger)
#14 Jacob J. Teets, father (I do not know if the J stands for Jackson, the same as my grandfather…?)
#15 Mary Elizabeth [See] Teets, mother
    #16 Hattie Teets Bradfield

    #18 Belle Teets Wilkins
#19, Mildred “Millie” Teets, wife of John

The other photo has all of the grandchildren included. My aunt Gladys is sitting on her mother’s lap (Cora Dellinger Teets) and my grandfather, Jacob Jackson Teets, is holding her older sister Thelma. My Aunt Gladys was born April 28, 1920 and she appears to be a few months old, so I’m thinking the photos were taken in the early fall of 1920. Her older brother, my uncle Harold, should be in the photo, but I don’t know which child he is. He was born January 11, 1914 so he should have been about 6 ½ years old in the photo. I have no idea the names of the other children in the photo.

The photo of Rachel Dellinger, Cora’s mother, shows her holding Gladys’ younger brother, Ralph Teets. He was born near Winchester, VA. (They lived in Stephens City, VA at the time of his birth. He was born March 8, 1929 and died July 30, 1959 with a heart condition due to rheumatic fever as a child. He never married and did not have children.

The other photo is of my father Cecil Jackson Teets (probably a school photo in Stephens City VA.) He was born in Lost River, WVA on Aug. 3, 1922 and died August 22, 1986 in Harrisonburg, VA. of a heart attack. He married Helen Marie Silman of Winchester on Aug. 21, 1948. They were married at the home of his sister Thelma Swadley and brother-in-law John Swadley in Hagerstown, MD. My mother, Helen Teets is still living in Harrisonburg, VA. There are 2 daughters and 3 grandsons from their marriage. Cecil Teets served in the Navy during WW II on a LST in the Pacific Ocean Campaign.

Thank you for the information your website has provided. It clarified several things for me in the photo, including my great grandmother’s maiden name [See]. I recently visited the cemetery near Lost River, WVA. (in Mathias, WVA) where she and Jacob J. Teets are buried (along with other relatives) and intend to go back to do some more research.

I will send updated photos in the future – one of Ralph and Gladys, along with photos of my father, Cecil Jackson Teets. (I have not found any photos of his brother Harold or his sister Thelma.) All of his siblings have died.

Thank you, John, for the work you are doing on the web site. I am thoroughly enjoying it!
On the profile of Cecil Jackson Teets - I love that you used the photo of my dad (Cecil Jackson Teets) in his profile. All of the information is correct EXCEPT Cecil and Helen (Silman)’s children (my sister and I):
    a. Please delete Helen S. Teets b. 1970 as one of their children. That is in error.
    b. Please add my sister’s correct information below my name: Candace Joy “ Candy” Teets b. 1956.
    c. By the way, beside my name Cheryl Lee “Cherry” Teets you may add my birth year b. 1950.
Thank you, again, for the hours of enjoyment you have given us with your website. My husband and I have really been using it. I will send you more information if you want it (and pictures, too) for my sister and I and our families.
It’s really nice to connect in some way to people we happen to be related to.

#17 Herbert Wilkins, husband of Belle Teets
    #18 Belle Teets Wilkins
