Bill Wilfong, 75, of Lutherville, Md., died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Towson, Md. He was born July 26, 1929 in Morgantown, a son of the late Clayborne and Henrietta Gainer Wilfong. On June 18, 1960, he married Dorothea Koldys Wilfong, who survives. He is also survived by one son, William and wife June of Singapore; daughter Nancy Raskin and husband Steve of Baltimore; sister, Ellen Wilfong Latimer of Charleston; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Laura Wilfong. Mr. Wilfong graduated from Weston High School in 1947. He was a high school athlete who went on to play college basketball at Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan. After serving in the Army from 1951 to 1953, he returned to West Virginia and earned a master's degree at West Virginia University in 1955. He worked in Pittsburgh until 1961 when he took a job with the Social Security Administration as a disability policy specialist. He was especially proud of the work he had done in seeing that our Vietnam prisoners of war were provided with diability payments for the length of time they were imprisoned in North Vietnam. After retiring in 1984 he started a second, part-time career as a home teacher for the Baltimore County School System. All students who are on suspension were allowed so manyhours of tutoring each week. In this capacity, he learned all the back roads in Baltimore County. It gave him a lot of satisfaction to teach a student who thought he was dumb and show him how arithmetic or English worked, and to hear the student say "That was easy." After a heart attack in 1984, he joined a cardiac fitness class at Towson University. Through the years he enjoyed reading the obituaries in "The Sun," especially the human interest tidbits. This is his: For 40 years he had the same barber. They started when Ross arrived in Baltimore from Italy and they went from shop to shop. A few years ago he went in for a haircut and sitting in the chair was this young kid, looked about 18, wearing shorts, with a beautiful head of hair. When he was done he noted that the "kid" was Jim Palmer, already retired from the Baltimore Orioles. Whe he sat down he said "I want you to give me a haircut just like Jim Palmer's." Ross hesitated. Mr. Wilfong said "Don't I tip as well as he does?" Poor Ross, wanting to be a diplimat, said, "Mr. Wilfong, it's not the hair, it's the texture." Mr. Wilfong was almost bald. A memorial mass will be at noon Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Church of the Nativity, Ridgely Rd., Timonium. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to St. Joseph's Medical Center, 7501 Osler Dr., Towson, MD 21204. - [S1253] Obit: Mary Ellen Wilfong Latimer, Charleston Newspapers, May 13, 2005
