When I began this portion of the family tree, I had Jim Hawkins letter and he had concentrated on the Lamberts. here's a portion:
Philip Lamberts’ family became devoted members of The Brethren, an 18th Century movement whose followers left the Lutheran Church in a major effort at reform. In practice, they resembled the Amish but added beliefs in celibacy (and, no, I can‘t explain the large families), non-violence, and abolition. The later belief caused our Lamberts to move from Virginia to Iowa and back during the Civil War. Granny Cox must have been raised in this atmosphere and for a lifetime felt guilty that her father had abandoned the family, causing them all to be banned from Church. I have a letter sent to Granny Cox by Jim Hawkins (Great-Aunt Grace’s son. He was in the Army during the Korean War and was stricken with polio while boarding ship. We met him once when Marianne was a baby and we were visiting Milt and Alice in Texas. He was completely bedridden, in an iron lung.) regarding the Lamberts. He had been doing extensive genealogical research, using snail mail, and results were slow building up. He had not traced the Lamberts beyond Philip and was operating under the assumption that the family was English but was beginning to suspect otherwise. He states that the Lambert-Lamberth association is very large but in 1977 had no Virginia Lamberts. It is Jim who states that Philip’s family were Dunkards and, not believing in violence, took off for Iowa when the Civil War began, returning to Virginia so destitute that Ida was forced into servitude, "farmed out as some sort of indentured servant" to the Wine family. The Wine family apparently adopted John McClure and Wilfong and Ida and John met there. Jim Hawkins says, "Old Grandpa Wilfong saddled Grandma with a total of six children and then left her to fend for herself--which she did. She remarried to an alcoholic who drank her broke. She divorced him and later remarried him. She divorced him again and married some other bum. Divorced him and married Sam Ersted, a solid Norwegian cabinet maker." With Philip, the family lost middle-class status and, with Ida and continuing with her children, were almost slaves. Indentured servitude was no longer legal by then but the law does not necessarily change behavior. Granny Cox remained close to her mother but refused to have anything to do with her father.

Hattie (Roberts), b. 23 April, 1891, d. March 1995; I could not find Hattie in the census reports except for 1910 where Hattie and William Wilfong are boarding with the Wert family in Ogden, Utah. Who William might be, I don’t know, unless William is actually Albert Edward. We visited Hattie in California where she owned an apartment complex, was a practical nurse, and was living with Granny Cox, when Dad returned from the Pacific in 1948. She married Roberts late in life and when he died, his sons began to abuse her. Don saw her and her savings safely to a nursing home in Sun City AZ. She had been a nurse and devoted her early years in the “retirement home” to protecting her roommate who suffered from Alzheimer’s. Charles, b. 1897 Iowa. Granny said he had been in an Army unit chasing Pancho Villa in Mexico in company with General Pershing in 1916 and that he was probably in WWI but I could not find a military record for him. He had spent some time in Tennessee, wound up in Phoenix, and had six children. Granny used to visit him several times a year and bought a bedroom set for "her" bedroom in Phoenix. Don and I didn’t care for Charles or his youngest Athleine (though I had never met her). We thought they took advantage of Granny’s bank account.

Grace (Ward B. Spell), b. 1897 in Iowa; she later married Hawkins and wound up in Texas. Granny had gone to visit the family when Milburn and I decided to see Milt and Alice. We took the camper and the whole bunch of us went to the zoo where we spent the afternoon in a warm, soaking rain and Marianne (not quite a year old) splashed her toes in the puddles. When we, kids and all, arrived at Grace’s house, Granny was appalled. She was very conscious of status and style and wanted to impress her sister and nephew with her grandchildren. I think they were impressed. They dried us out and fed us sloppy joes, wiped up the puddles, and waved goodby. I’m not sure Granny ever recovered. - [S46] Book: "The Wilfong Family of North America", by Terence Roy Kidd, p.428.
