     John Mathew Harclerode married Elizabeth (?).1 John Mathew Harclerode was born on 13 January 1740/41 in Loudoun, Virginia.1 He was the son of Johan Heinrich Herchelroth and Johanna Elizabetha Fey.2 John Mathew Harclerode married Maria Barbara Smouse, daughter of Henry Schmaus and Catharine Foltz, in 1770 in Virginia.1 John Mathew Harclerode died on 24 January 1814 in Colerain, Bedford, Pennsylvania, at age 73.1 He was buried after 24 January 1814 in Beegle Farm Cemetery.1
     One of the earliest mills in Friends Cove was built by John Harclerode. He owned 700 acres of land, a saw mill, and a distillery. He was also a church deacon.1 The land John & Barbara Harclerode purchased when they came to Bedford County from Loudoun County, VA was surveyed on April 19, 1766. The land was sold to Robert Moore, patent dated September 1, 1789 to Philip Deal/Diehl of 532 acres. He sold part of the land [332 acres] to John Harclerode on February 4, 1791 at a price of 680 pounds. This deed is recorded in Bedford County Courthouse for both land and appurtenances.1 John's will was dated June 15, 1799 which was after Barbara's death. He must have married Elizabeth by this time because their daughter, Susannah was born in August 1799. Elizabeth agreed not to accept part of the inheritance or profit in case of John's death, which she signed in the presence of Martin Reily, Attorney, and later renounced (Will Book 1, page 396, Bedford County Courthouse, January 26, 1814). By 1814, she had 4 minor children (Rachel, Hannah, Sarah, and Mary). On April 5, 1814, Elizabeth petitioned the Orphan's Court to appoint a guardian for her minor children. The court appointed John Schell and Anthony Smith as joint guardians.1
