    SOLOMON — Ida Gross, 86, former Hays resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Whispering Timbers Assisted Living Center.
    She was born Feb. 22, 1917, to Mike and Mary (Stecklein) Befort.
    She married Jacob “Jake” Gross on June 19, 1939. He died Jan. 9, 1997. She was a nurse's aide and worked at St. Anthony Hospital for most of her life. Upon retirement she worked as a home health nurse and a senior companion for eight years.
    She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society and Christian Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, all in Hays.
    Survivors include three sons, Jim, Portland, Ore., Alan, San Clemente, Calif., and Brad, Milford; a daughter, Laurie Gross, Milford; three brothers, William Befort, Hays, George Befort, Arizona, and Jim Befort, Denver; five sisters, Mary Leiker, Rose Ann Giebler and Dorothy Gottschalk, all of Hays, Olivia Legleiter, Solomon, and Helen Weaver, Salina; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a son, Tom, two daughters, Mary Catherine Gottschalk and Sheila Chavez, six brothers, Ralph, Adam, Harry, Albinus, Robert and Mike Befort, Jr.; and by two sisters, Sister Firmina Befort and Esther Riedel.

    She was born Feb. 22, 1917, to Mike and Mary (Stecklein) Befort.
    She married Jacob “Jake” Gross on June 19, 1939. He died Jan. 9, 1997. She was a nurse's aide and worked at St. Anthony Hospital for most of her life. Upon retirement she worked as a home health nurse and a senior companion for eight years.
    She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society and Christian Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, all in Hays.
    Survivors include three sons, Jim, Portland, Ore., Alan, San Clemente, Calif., and Brad, Milford; a daughter, Laurie Gross, Milford; three brothers, William Befort, Hays, George Befort, Arizona, and Jim Befort, Denver; five sisters, Mary Leiker, Rose Ann Giebler and Dorothy Gottschalk, all of Hays, Olivia Legleiter, Solomon, and Helen Weaver, Salina; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

    There will be a Sisters of St. Agnes and Associates memorial prayer service at 4:30 p.m., a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand Honor Guard from 6 to 7 p.m., all Sunday at the funeral home.

    She was born Feb. 22, 1917, to Mike and Mary (Stecklein) Befort.
    She married Jacob “Jake” Gross on June 19, 1939. He died Jan. 9, 1997. She was a nurse's aide and worked at St. Anthony Hospital for most of her life. Upon retirement she worked as a home health nurse and a senior companion for eight years.
    She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society and Christian Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, all in Hays.
    Survivors include three sons, Jim, Portland, Ore., Alan, San Clemente, Calif., and Brad, Milford; a daughter, Laurie Gross, Milford; three brothers, William Befort, Hays, George Befort, Arizona, and Jim Befort, Denver; five sisters, Mary Leiker, Rose Ann Giebler and Dorothy Gottschalk, all of Hays, Olivia Legleiter, Solomon, and Helen Weaver, Salina; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by six brothers, Ralph Befort, Albinus Befort, Adam Befort, Robert Befort and Mike Befort; and by three sisters, Ida Gross, Esther Riedel and Sister Firmina Befort.
    Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Our Lady, Help of Christians Church, Antonino; burial in Our Lady, Help of Christians Cemetery, Antonino.
    Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, all at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays.
    There will be a Sisters of St. Agnes and Associates memorial prayer service at 4:30 p.m., a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand Honor Guard from 6 to 7 p.m., all Sunday at the funeral home.
    Memorials are suggested to St. John Rest Home, Hays.
