     George W. Gum was born circa 1844 in Highland, Virginia.² He was the son of John Gum and Mary "Polly" Gum.¹ George W. Gum died on 18 May 1864.¹
     He enlisted in the Civil War as a Private with the 62nd Regiment, VA Mounted Calvary and was a Sergeant at the time of his death. George was killed on May 18, 1864, at the Battle of New Market. He was buried in Saint Matthews Cemetery in New Market, Virginia. His gravestone still stands and simply reads;
